Current group members

Jacob Gunnarson
UH Mānoa Oceanography Graduate Student
(Fall Semester 2020 - Present)

Jacob earned his bachelor’s degree in physics at the College of William & Mary and worked for two years at Hampton University researching the atmospheric dynamics of Venus, Jupiter, and Saturn. Jacob’s current research focuses on the effect of greenhouse gas emissions on future climate variability. He is particularly interested in future changes to the variability of sea surface temperature and wind-driven upwelling that could negatively impact marine ecosystems and fisheries. Jacob uses large ensemble climate models to investigate the physical mechanisms behind these changes in an effort to provide a better basis for understanding and adapting to climate change.

Hillary Beckmeyer
UH Mānoa Oceanography Graduate Student
(Spring Semester 2023 - Present)

Hillary
has a B.A. in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences from the University of Colorado - Boulder and a B.A. in International Relations/Comparative Cultures and Politics from Michigan State University. Prior to joining UH, Hillary worked as a field researcher at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. She is currently studying the dynamics of the ocean circulation and their potential future changes.

Vera Stockmayer
UH Mānoa Oceanography Graduate Student
(Spring Semester 2025 - Present)

Visiting Graduate Student - Kiel University, Germany
(Spring semester 2024)

(Co-advised with Niklas Schneider)

Vera has a M.S. in Climate Physics and a B.S. in Physics of the Earth System: Meteorology, Oceanography and Geophysiscs from the Christian-Albrechts-University Kiel in Germany. She is working on the dynamics of low-frequency climate variability in the Pacific Ocean.

Sen Zhao
Assistant Researcher (partially supported by the Stuecker Climate Dynamics Lab)
(11/2021 - Present)

Sen earned his bachelor's degree in Atmospheric Sciences from Lanzhou University and his PhD in Meteorology from the Institute of Atmospheric Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. His research focuses on large-scale climate variability and change and their impacts.

Yuxin Wang
Postdoctoral
Researcher (co-advised  with Matthew Widlansky)
(12/2024 - Present)

Yuxin has PhD and a Bachelor from the University of Tasmania in Australia, as well as a Bachelor from the Ocean University of China. She is currently working on improving seasonal sea level forecasts for the U.S. East Coast to benefit high tide flooding outlooks. Her research interests include monthly sea level forecasting, marine heatwave predictability, climate variability, and oceanic wave dynamics.

Tomoki Iwakiri
Postdoctoral
Researcher
(7/2025 - Present)

Tomoki received is PhD and M.S. from the University of Tokyo and is B.S. from Nihon University. Prior to joining UH he had postdoctoral researcher and JSPS Research Fellow appointments at Seoul National University, Ochanomizu University, the Japan Meteorological Research Institute, and the University of Tokyo. His research includes large-scale air-sea interactions, the dynamics of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation, climate mitigation and irreversibility, future climate change and paleoclimate.

Glenn Liu
Postdoctoral
Researcher
(9/2025 onwards)
