Other Policies:

SupportAny student who feels he or she may need an accommodation based on a disability should contact me privately to discuss the specific need.  Also, please contact the KOKUA program to coordinate reasonable accommodations.

Participation Grade and Attendance Policy10% of your grade is for participation; this is for your own good. If you participate you will learn more and get more out of the course. Just showing up will not get you 10/10.  To get 10/10 you need to show up and speak up!  Participation points can and will be deducted if you miss classes, if you are habitually late, if you are disruptive or disrespectful, if you are texting or obviously not paying attention, and so forth. These are your points to earn or to lose. Again, this is for your own good!

Academic Dishonesty:  The definition of academic misconduct is (a) cheating (using unauthorized materials, information, or study aids in any academic exercise), plagiarism, falsification of records, unauthorized possession of examinations, intimidation, and any other actions that may improperly affect the evaluation of the student's academic performance or achievement; (b) assisting others in such act; or (c) attempting to engage in such acts.   For "suspected" misconduct, the parties involved will get a zero for the exam, homework or project.   Any evidence of cheating will also be forwarded directly to the university authorities for further investigation and punitive steps may be pursued, possibly to the fullest extent of academic dishonesty punishment (e.g., expulsion from UH).    Please find guidelines regarding Student Conduct at http://studentaffairs.manoa.hawaii.edu/policies/conduct_code/.

Plagiarism:  Plagiarism includes but is not limited to submitting, in fulfillment of an academic requirement, any work that has been copied in whole or in part from another individual's work without attributing that borrowed portion to the individual; neglecting to identify as a quotation another's idea and particular phrasing that was not assimilated into the student's language and style or paraphrasing a passage so that the reader is misled as to the source; submitting the same written or oral or artistic material in more than one course without obtaining authorization from the instructors involved; or "drylabbing," which includes obtaining and using experimental data and laboratory write-ups from other sections of a course or from previous terms.   Furthermore, allowing your work to be copied is also considered plagiarism, so guard your work to prevent others from copying it.  We can and do check chegg.com, coursehero.com, etc.

Group Project Grading Policy:  Your project grade is, in part, based on the results of your group's peer evaluations. If you contribute less than your share, your final grade will be adjusted downward, possibly to 0.  And, of course, if you contribute more, your grade will be adjusted up.

Assignment Late Policy:  Assignment due dates and times will always be clearly communicated in class, on the course schedule, and on Laulima. Unless otherwise stated, assignments are due at the start of class.  Late assignments lose 20% for every day they are late, and that day ends at midnight. So, for example, if you turn in your assignment late but on the due date, it is a 20% penalty. If you turn it in the next day, that is a two day penalty.

Grade Appeals Procedure: Any appeal that you wish to make regarding a grade that you were assigned must be done so in writing.  Please send an email to your grader (cc'ing me) explaining why you believe your grade is in error.  If it is worth your time to write the appeal, it is worth our time to consider it.

Attitude / Academic Rigor: This is a business class focusing on IT, which aims at stimulating your business ideas and strengthening your skills involving presentation, discussion, communications, and working in a semester-long team project where we will have to work very closely together to achieve course objectives. This is OUR class:   We will do everything to make the class interesting and help you when you encounter difficulty in the learning process and need your cooperation to be FULLY participating in this class.   Each of you have something to contribute to this class and we all can learn from each other in so many  ways.  We all need to foster a learning environment that is professional, respectful, friendly, fun and intellectually stimulating.  Your preparedness, attitude, and leadership will earn you credit while negative attitude and behavior will impact adversely on your participation grade. Finally, we follow the Shidler College's policy on academic rigor.  Please ensure that you are familiar with this policy.

Attendance:   As a future business professional, you are expected to be on time and attend all class sessions. Plan to spend the entire 75 minutes of each class engaged.  Go to the bathroom before the class.  Get a drink before the class.  Turn off your phone ringer.  Class time should be sacrosanct.

  • Unexcused absences and/or excessive lateness/tardiness will result in a lowering of your participation grade, up to a one letter grade penalty.
  • Excessive unexcused absences (>5) may result in an "F" in this class.

Communications:  Feel free to ask any questions at any time. As students come to this class with various backgrounds,  sometimes we may (wrongly) assume what you know and don't know.  We  are here to help you learn... and the better we communicate, the better your learning outcome will be.  You are encouraged to talk with each other and with us after class about your assignments, concerns, or questions. You may also e-mail to make an appointment.

Reading Assignments:  You are expected to do your reading assignments prior to class meetings.  Not all reading materials will be covered in class. However, you will be expected to apply readings in class discussions and homework/assignments and will be accountable for reading assignments in quizzes and exams. Therefore, it is essential to keep up with the readings as they are assigned, and to bring your questions to class. You should be prepared to study at least 3 hours for every 1 hour in class. This is a total 9 hours per week outside class at a minimum.  Your grades will reflect your level of effort.

Quizzes:  All quizzes are available at classmarker.com.  All quizzes open at 8:30 a.m. on the day that they are assigned (see the course schedule page) and stay open for exactly 48 hours.  It is your responsibility to take the quiz during this 48 hour period.  I strongly suggest you add the quiz dates to your calendar.  I will drop your (one) lowest quiz grade so if you mess up once, this won't affect your quiz average.

Lab Assignments and Homework:  The assignments/homework are designed to help you understand the course material and to prepare you for exams, your course project, and for a successful business career.  All homework and assignments are due at the beginning of the class.

Group Project:  You will be participating in a group project, simulating a real-world work situation.   Refer to the Assignments page for group project requirements, guidelines and peer grading policies.

Incomplete: Students requesting an incomplete must meet two criteria.  They must: 1) be passing the course with a grade of "B" or better; 2) have a documented medical reason (documentation must be obtained through the Dean of Student Academic Services).

Course Add/Drop/Withdrawal:  All requests for changes in registration (add/drop) are processed by OSAS.  The Dean of Student Academic Services approves or denies requests for course withdrawals after the deadline.  See the university catalog for the deadlines.
