Design of a Constructed Wetland to Treat Urban Stormwater Runoff

EPA, P3 (People, Prosperity, Planet)

Sept 2007-May 2008

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sponsors a student sustainability design competition under its People, Prosperity, Planet (P3) program. We submitted a proposal for a Phase I award to design a constructed wetland to treat urban stormwater runoff from an area at the mauka end of campus and encompassing Noelani School. We were awarded $10,000 to design the wetland. A copy of the research plan is here (project plan.pdf).

Since this is a student-led project, we are encouraging broad participation of faculty and students, both undergradaute and graduate. Contact Dr. Travis Idol if you are interested in joining our team.

The 4th Annual National Sustainable Design Expo at which we will present our design will be held at the National Mall in Washington, DC on April 20-22, 2008. The website is here: http://es.epa.gov/ncer/p3/expo/index.html. If you are a team member and wish to register to attend the Expo, you can do so here: www.scgcorp.com/p3. The project has funds to help cover travel expenses. The university also has travels funds for students and faculty, but you must apply for them at least 4 weeks in advance.

Our poster presentation at the P3 Expo went well. The students did a nice job answering the judge's questions and talking to elementary school students who stopped by. The students also talked with students from other teams to discuss their projects, as well. Although we didn't win one of the Phase II awards, we did learn a lot and get a chance to see our nation's capitol. Our Phase I report, the posters, and pictures from our trip can be found below.

Although our P3 project is officially done, we are still pursuing funding to implement the constructed wetland design. We are now writing a full implementation proposal to be submitted to the State of Hawaii Department of Health. Check back every month or so to keep up with our progress.
