Dr. Brian Wissman grew up in the San Francisco bay area and
earned his Ph.D. from the University of California, Davis in 2007.
After receiving his degree, Dr. Wissman joined the faculty at the
University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo where he is currently Interim Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Professor of Mathematics. His research interests include
topics from nonlinear dynamics such as Gas Dynamics and Shockwaves, and
analysis of nonlinear systems using Information Theory. With his
applied mathematics background, Dr. Wissman regularly teaches classes
on Ordinary and Partial Differential Equations, Chaos, and Mathematical
Physics. Moreover, he has supervised directed study classes on advanced
topics such as Nonlinear Conservation Laws and General
Relativity. Dr. Wissman was Co-PI for the Pacific Undergrauate
Research Experience
(PURE) Mathematics REU and a Project NExT Fellow (Sun Dot, 2007). Beginning in 2011,
Dr. Wissman established and co-organizes the UH Hilo Putnam team.
Outside of academics, Dr. Wissman enjoys playing Ultimate Frisbee at
the Hilo Bayfront Fields and coaches youth cross country.
