Jan Hathaway teaches interface design, typography and digital imaging. Prior to her work with KCC, she had a multimedia/graphic design business and taught as an Assistant Professor in Art at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, East Tennessee State University, and Mississippi University for Women. She received a MFA and a BFA in Printmaking and Photography from the University of Alabama. She actively exhibits and publishes her 2D and 3D digital print collage locally and nationally. Recently she has had several pieces of her collage and a review published in Surrealist Subversions, Rants, Writings and Images by the Surrealist Movement in the United States. Chris Gargiulo Instructor in ArtChris Gargiulo is a digital designer with experience in motion graphics and animation for various film, multimedia and web-based projects, along with graphic design and front-end web programming. He has recently completed a MFA Design and Technology, Parsons School of Design; BA Amherst College. Prior to his MFA, he worked as an Art Director and Animator for Cheil Communications America and Samsung Electronics USA; as a Designer and Animator for www.kpe.com; and as Graphic Designer for Hula Girl Design. Recent Art Work & Shows include: The Interim: Intersubjectivity in Short Cinema (Parsons Annual Animation & DV Film Festival) and Hanging in the Balance (San Francisco Ocean Film Festival).
Sharon Sussman Instructor in ArtSharon Sussman teaches courses in digital art and animation. Before coming to O`ahu, she was in the Digital Artistic Development Department at DreamWorks Feature Animation where she helped artists transition from traditional painting and animation to digital. She previously taught both traditional art and digital art at the University of California at Santa Cruz and at San Jose State University. Ms. Sussman attended the University of California at Santa Barbara in Fine Art, but interrupted her studies to live with the Mayan Indians in Yucatan, Mexico and with the Quakers in Monteverde, Costa Rica. Upon returning to the United States, she continued her art studies in painting and, following that, in Digital Art and Animation culminating in a Masters degree in Computer Art from San Jose State University.
Joseph Tremonti Instructor in ArtJoseph Tremonti teaches 3D animation, digital post-production, and gaming. Joseph is a new media artist and researcher specializing in computer animation and interactive computer graphics. He received a BFA in 3D Computer Animation from the University of Georgia, Athens, GA and an MFA in Electronic Visualization from the University of Illinois at Chicago. While studying at Electronic Visualization Lab, Joseph developed networked virtual reality environments and interactive installations using the CAVE and associated display systems. His work explores the interrelationship between technologically mediated environments and human perception/interaction. His 3D environments and animations have been exhibited internationally at venues including the NTT InterCommunication Center, Tokyo, Japan, Ars Electronica Center, Linz, Austria, and the C3 Center for Culture and Communication, Budapest, Hungary.
Elizabeth Nakoa Instructor in ArtElizabeth Nakoa teaches Introduction to Design and History of Communication Design. She worked in the design field as a signage graphic artist and production coordinator. Elizabeth is active in the local printmaking community and has exhibited work locally, nationally and in Holland. She received her BFA in Graphic Design from the University of Hawaii and MFA in Printmaking from Colorado State University.
Teri Durland New Media Arts CounselorTeri Durland provides counseling and advising services to NMA students. Ms. Durland has over 15 years of experience working with students in a post-secondary academic advising and counseling setting. Prior to her work with KCC, she was the Academic Services Officer and Assistant to the Vice-Chancellor at Hawaii Tokai International College. She has an A.B. in Psychology from Stanford University.
NEW MEDIA ARTS FACULTY - PART-TIME: Karen Jones Instructor in ArtKaren Jones teaches introduction to graphic design. She has worked as a graphic designer and art director in advertising agencies, corporate in-house agencies and design studios, as well as maintaining her own graphic design business. Her advertising and design experience ranges from editorial design, to food and prop styling, to ad and marketing campaigns. She received a BFA with distinction from the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa in graphic design, and also studied at Brigham Young University-Provo, Honolulu Community College, Pacific New Media and the Culinary Institute of America at Hyde Park. The recipient of design and advertising awards from the Hawai‘i Advertising Federation, she has also received a Pa‘i Award from the Hawai‘i Publishers Association for black and white photography.
Ailed Garcia Instructor in ArtAiled E. Garcia-Saavedra is a graphic designer, multimedia artist, and educator. She received her M.F.A. degree in Multi-media in 2005 from San Diego State University in California and a B.S. in Graphic Design from California State University, Sacramento in 2000. She has established herself as a freelance graphic designer and web developer since 1998. Specializing in educational organizations and non-profit organizations for social change, Ms. Garcia-Saavedra's professional experience includes developing, restructuring and maintaining websites, developing marks, collateral packaging and promotional materials for organizations, small businesses and larger corporations. Ronald McDonald House Charities, San Diego State University Art Council, Omega Street Soldiers, are among a few of her clients. Crossing over into the realm of an artist, she recently exhibited a video piece entitled, LOSS | Psyche & Soma: Reborn Into Consciousness at the San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art. Mrs. Garcia-Saavedra also currently serving as a lecturer at Kapiolani Community College, University of Hawaii, Manoa, and has also taught at San Diego State University.
Kristin Paulo Instructor in ArtKristin Paulo teaches interface design programming. She is the Director of Creative Technology at StarrTech Interactive. She is the former founder and owner of Hula Net, Inc, and has a BS in Business/Management from the University of Phoenix. Kristin has won Interactive design awards for her work for such clients as Hawaiian Airlines, the Office of Hawaiian Affairs and the Marianas Visitors Authority.
