Aloha,

We have all seen the horrific photographs of the aftermath of the recent earthquake in Turkey (Türkiye) and Syria.

Here are a few NGOs already on scene:

Doctors without Borders (Medecins sans Frontieres)

Mercy Corps (Note: Mercy Corps was already in Syria when the earthquake hit and was thus able to respond immediately.)

UNICEF (United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund)

or go directly to the UNICEF website specifically for the USA:

UNICEF USA (Note: The "UNICEF USA" web-site allows one to donate in U.S. currency and, if you wish, to record your donation on your tax form.)

USA for UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) (Note: "Refugees" in this case includes people who have lost everything in the earthquake and are in need of food, shelter, blankets, etc., immediately.)

Aloha,

A number of entities are working to assist the refugees fleeing from Ukraine. Here are a few of them:

CARE USA

International Rescue Committee

Save the Children

UNHCR (The UN Refugee Agency)

Aloha,

As most of you know, I'm retired. But I still care about my students and want all of you to be safe and healthy. Here are a few links to information resources that might be of use:

Resources concerning hurricanes currently within or approaching the Central Pacific region:

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Central Pacific Hurricane Center:

Websites where you can find information about emergency preparedness and sign up with your county emergency alert system:

For those of you who have not yet gotten a vaccine against COVID-19 here is a site that lists places where you can be vaccinated:

Find a Vaccine Provider Near You (https://www.oneoahu.org/find-vaccine)

This site not only gives the places but also, for the larger sites, the days and times the vaccinations are available as well as whether or not you are required to get an appointment ahead of time.

Information about the pandemic:

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) page

Some of the topics on the CDC COVID-19 website:

The World Health Organization Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak page

Aloha,

For any former students who wish to utilize my cataloging Powerpoints to refresh your knowledge, you might want to download those files now before they disappear. I will leave them up as long as I can but I do not know how long that will be.

If you have any questions you can most reliably reach me though e-mail at:
