You are welcome to call my office phone or set up a zoom videoconferencing time. Otherwise, all communication will be through Laulima (https://laulima.hawaii.edu) and your UH email (http://mail.google.com/a/hawaii.edu). Email from other accounts will not be accepted, due to potential Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) issues. I will try my best to respond to your emails within 24 hours. On weekends and holidays, I usually "unplug" and respond to emails on the following workday.
When you have a general question or comment, please post to the Discussions tool in Laulima, so all students will benefit from it. When you have a personal question or comment, please email the instructor directly.

Students are expected to attend and participate in the courses for which they are registered. The University of Hawai’i is required, by federal regulation, to verify the participation of students in their classes. According to Executive Policy 7.209, students who fail to establish attendance by the late registration period will be administratively dropped from their class. Students may also be dropped from other classes that are dependent on the class where they failed to establish attendance (i.e. co-requisite or future class where the dropped class meets the prerequisite requirement).
This is a three (3.0) credit class, so you are expected to work at least six (6.0) hours a week out of class, which is nine (9.0) total hours a week. For details, see Executive Policy 5.228 Part II. Definitions - A credit hour.
Students earn one (1) point for attending one class and/or writing a post on the Discussions Tool in Laulima. It is two (2) points maximum per week, and 30 points maximum possible for this class.
We will use NETLAB+ virtual computer labs. The labs will be done
online on your own. The purpose of the labs is to give you
hands-on experience with the concepts that we cover in the class
lectures. While most of the labs correspond to the class
lecture material, some of the labs will have supplemental
exercises on concepts that are not covered in the class
lectures. Each lab has detailed instructions on how to complete
it, so this should not be a concern.
To submit your netlab, take a screen shot of the netlab at
the end of each netlab, after you have entered the last command
in the netlab. Email the screen shot to the instructor.
We will take quizzes on Laulima's Assignments, Tests and Surveys. The quizzes will be done online and on your own. The purpose of the quizzes is to (1) review the material, and (2) practice taking the exams. Quizzes have 10 questions, a 10 minute limit, and unlimited tries. The highest quiz score is saved in Laulima.
No makeup exams will be given. Exams are open book with a 50 minute time limit, 50 questions, and 3 tries.
The Security+ practice exam (optional) is in the Assignments, Tests, and Surveys tool in Laulima at the bottom of the list of quizzes and exams, after exam5. The Security+ practice exam (optional) is a practice exam for students interested in taking the CompTIA Security+ SY0-701 Exam. It is the same format as the real exam - 90 questions for 90 minutes. The domains covered are the same percentages as the real exam. It does not count towards your grade in ICS 171. It is an optional exam that y'all can take over and over to prepare for the real exam. The more you practice taking the exam, the better you will do on the real exam. Hope it helps!
Please keep up with the pace of the class by completing the Labs, Quizzes, Exams, and Weekly Participation (class attendance and/or discussions tool posts) as posted on the schedule. You can check on your current grade in the Laulima Gradebook.
The suggested due date for the Labs, Quizzes, Exams, and Weekly Participation (class attendance and/or discussions tool posts) is the day before the next class at 11:59 PM.
The absolute due date for all Labs, Quizzes, Exams, and Weekly Participation (class attendance and/or discussions tool posts) is Thursday, December 19th at 11:59pm. After this date, Labs, Quizzes, Exams, and Weekly Participation (class attendance and/or discussions tool posts) will NOT be accepted.
In this class, an incomplete is only given to students who could not attend the last week of class, due to hardship situations. You need to show proof, such as a doctor's note, obituary, etc. Makeup work is due before the next semester's first day of classes.
Students are required to complete and submit their own work. Sharing files, copying, plagiarism, or other such acts will not be tolerated and are subject to penalties including a zero (0) on the first occurrence and a grade of F for the course on the second occurrence. Refer to Academic Dishonesty in the Student Conduct Code for additional information.
Academic dishonesty cannot be condoned by the University. Such dishonesty includes cheating and plagiarism (examples of which are given below), which violate the Student Conduct Code and could result in expulsion from the University.
Cheating includes but is not limited to giving unauthorized help during an examination, obtaining unauthorized information about an examination before it is administered, using inappropriate sources of information during an examination, altering the record of any grades, altering answers after an examination has been submitted, falsifying any official University record, and misrepresenting the facts in order to obtain exemptions from course requirements.
Plagiarism includes but is not limited to submitting any document, to satisfy an academic requirement, that has been copied in whole or part from another individual’s work without identifying that individual; neglecting to identify as a quotation a documented idea that has not been assimilated into the student’s language and style, or paraphrasing a passage so closely that the reader is misled as to the source; submitting the same written or oral material in more than one course without obtaining authorization from the instructors involved; or dry-labbing, which includes (a) obtaining and using experimental data from other students without the express consent of the instructor, (b) utilizing experimental data and laboratory write-ups from other sections of the course or from previous terms during which the course was conducted, and (c) fabricating data to fit the expected results.
