Survival and Miscellaneous Equipment
Example of a checklist that can be used to gather equipment in an emergency. Compiled by Ralph Toyama.
- Hiking day pack (a frameless "backpack" that purists would never call a backpack)
- First aid kit (also includes mylar/foil "space" blanket, water purification tablets,
vinyl gloves, matches, small Ziploc bags)
- Polypropylene thermal underwear, wool socks, rain poncho (made of coated
nylon — can be used as a shelter)
- Carabiners, tubular nylon webbing (climbing grade), leather gloves
- Nylon cord, aluminum foil, medium-sized Ziploc bag, patching tape, notepad
- Flagging tape (a thin, inch wide, non-adhesive colored plastic tape,
used for marking trails), compass, binoculars
- Knife, knife sharpener, trowel (plastic, for digging), nylon cord, safety pins
- Whistle, strobe light (small, battery operated), chemical
lightstick, fire stick
(A treated wood product that burns easily. Please note that some
soils can actually burn and sustain fire — please do not build a fire unless
absolutely necessary, and exercise extreme care if you do.)
- Personal-items pouch (contains Kleenex, toilet paper,
insect repellent, sunscreen, lip balm, bandanna, filter mask)
- Sierra cup (stainless steel shallow cup with wire handle)
- Rain gear bag (rain suit,
rubber boots,
rubber slippers,
towel,
socks,
plastic bags)
- Small bag of food and bottled water (non-perishable, no-cook items like energy bars, crackers, beef jerky, etc.)
- Electronic thermometer/humidity meter (to aid in reporting weather conditions)
- Storage clipboard (pens, paper, index cards, file folders, stapler, tape, message forms
forms)
- Portable file case
- Manuals, guides, and procedures from the agencies and groups that I serve
- Pamphlets, training handouts, notes
- Maps, charts, phone and frequency lists
- Instruction manuals for radios, list of memory channel contents
- Briefcase (would remove work-related contents, but retain the
following:)
- Miscellaneous personal medication
- Pre-moistened towelettes, Kleenex
- CPR mask, gloves, filter mask
- Miniature flashlight
- Miniature slotted/phillips screwdriver
- Small AM-FM radio
- Spare AA and AAA alkaline batteries
- Spare cell phone battery
- Spare pens, felt-tipped marker pen
- Sunglasses
- Department of Emergency Management ID card
- Flashlight
- 1-liter wide-mouth plastic water bottle (stored in car — change water if possible)
