Why was my summer overload pay at only 75% of my regular pay rate?

For years, the administration determined my overload pay by taking my annual salary and dividing it by 12 to calculate my "monthly salary", and basing my pay on that figure. But since I was actually getting paid for only nine months of work per year, this "monthly" rate was actually 75% of what my true monthly rate should have been.

How could they get away with that? Because the faculty contract didn't specify what the overload pay for non-instructional faculty should be. It only specified a per-credit schedule for teaching classes beyond the standard teaching load.
