The Song of the Woman

by Lurana O'Malley

'Tis a far far longer day that I must face

'Tis a far far harder road that I must tread

'Tis a far far harsher wind that I must bear

But I keep myself silent for my father

As a daughter I cowered 'neath his crushing blows

And I never raised my eyes to meet his hardened glance

As a sister I watched as he went off to war

But I kept myself silent for my country

As a wife I endured the pain of fists and spite

And I never raised my voice to question his command

As a mother I buried three soldiers here

Now I'll no more keep silent, oh my sisters

'Tis a far far longer day that I must face

'Tis a far far harder road that I must tread

'Tis a far far harsher wind that I must bear

Now I'll no more keep silent, oh my sisters

'Tis a far far longer way that I must go

As I board this train to leave my county

But it's far far better for my baby girl

And I'll keep her so safe, oh my daughter

'Tis a far far finer day than we have seen

And a far far sweeter air that we can breathe

As the morning colors play upon the distant sky

I shall seek my new freedom with my daughter

And I'll keep her so safe, oh my daughter
