OVERVIEW OF OUR PROGRAM

The mission of the Kalakaua Marine Education Center is to promote excellence in marine education by challenging students to think critically and creatively about the natural world and their role in it. To achieve these goals we have developed a multidisciplinary, experiential program which combines traditional education, marine recreation, internships and field method workshops. These objectives are realized in our marine science baccalaureate degree program, the Marine Option Program, our award-winning summer session, and QUEST, a coral reef monitoring workshop. Our baccalaureate degree program is designed to provide practical, working knowledge of the biology, chemistry, geology and physics of the world's oceans, with a special emphasis on the tropical Pacific. Many of our courses are field oriented and incorporate writing and speaking intensive presentations of student field research. The Marine Option Program is a University of Hawai'i system-wide program designed to give all students a marine experience. At Hilo this includes camping, sailing, snorkeling, green sea turtle tagging, guest speakers and informal workshops on a variety of marine-related topics. During the summer we offer several courses from our marine science major in addition to speciality courses which take advantage of the unique environment of the big island of Hawai'i. Finally, QUEST is a special two-week workshop taught at UH-Hilo by faculty from throughout the University of Hawai'i system which focuses on the ecological monitoring of coral reefs. Students in this course learn the theory and practice of conducting safe and scientifically valid surveys on coral reefs using a variety of monitoring methods.
