The class curve was a little strange this semester. So many students were clustered within 1 percent of each other at the 83 - 86 mark that it was impossible to cut the curve between them. It isn't fair to give an 86.3 and A while an 85.5 (less than 1 percent difference) is a B. So I had a choice: either I give 7 A's or 2 A's. Neither choice is a good choice, since my target number is 25% of the class should get A's. Looking at the lab scores (a good indication of the amount of work done by a student) and the extra credit, I decided that the 83 - 86 % group had worked very hard this summer. Ordinarily I do not give this many A's, and I almost never consider an 83% an "A" grade. But as you learned in the darts lab, a low number of trials (in this case, students) can lead to a badly shaped Gaussian! So here's your very strange curve: Average total score: 78.2% (the lab average is supposed to be a "B").
81-100% A (7 of 13 students, 53.8% of the class)
68-81% B (4 of 13 students, 30.8% of the class)
below 68% C(1 of 13 students, 7.7% of the class)
*failure to complete labs F (1 of 13 students, 7.7% of the class)
