As part of the experience of using UHM's HITS system, the author has requested feedback and suggestions on a digital version of this system. One of the suggestions [1] was that students need a mechanism for searching quickly through stored video, with the ability to review or find specific parts of lectures without having to scan through the entire lecture.
In the ensuing conversation, we realized that any notes, slides, or overheads the instructor is using in the class can, if displayed by a computer, automatically be used as an index into the video of the lecture. The computer simply keeps track of the time at which a slide is presented, and indexes the video stream correspondingly.
We are not aware of any existing system that does this, and we therefore suggest it as a simple, practical, low-overhead way of indexing video of formal presentations.
