Displaying DVI
For Netscape on the Suns
To display DVI files under netscape on the Unix machines, select the
Options menu, then General Preferences, then
Helpers. You'll get a list titled MIME Configuration
Files. Edit (or add) the entry for application/x-dvi to
say: /opt/cs/bin/xdvi %s (the %s is required).
After you exit from the options menu, your netscape should be able to
display DVI files.
Printing
The command "dvips" takes a named DVI file as input and produces a
postscript file as output. This can then be given as an argument to
"lpr". See "man dvips" to figure out how to print just a few of the
pages.
Microsoft Windows
Here is a complete description of
how to display DVI files under Windows. (Found by Ned Carreon).
Other browsers
Any browser you use should be configurable and have the ability to
display different MIME types, you just need to figure out how. Once
you know how to configure it, simply tell it to invoke
/opt/cs/bin/xdvi on the data.
Other operating systems
Generally, xdvi is available somewhere on almost any Unix system,
though you may need to use the find command to find it. I
don't know about Windows and Windows/NT, so if you find out how to do
it, please let me know (esb@hawaii.edu) so I can add it to
this page.
