2-4-6 Spare System
(Right Handers)
For right handed hook and straight bowlers or left handed backup bowlers.
The 2-4-6 system has a slightly higher percentage of achieving the spare than the more commonly used 3-6-9 but it is harder to implement in the first place as it involves picking out an individual BOARD at the arrows, rather than a particular arrow, which is easier to see. For that reason, it is probably more beneficial to the more experienced bowler who is used to moving their target on the lane.
Establish a line for the strike and 10 pin in your warm up practice time.
For pins LEFT of the headpin:
Use the headpin target at the arrows as your starting point.
Keep your feet in the same place and move your target at the arrows (15 feet down the lane) two boards to the left per pin away from the headpin. I.e. for the 2 and 8 pins, move your target TWO boards LEFT, for the 4 pin, move your target FOUR boards LEFT and for the 7 pin, move your target SIX boards LEFT.
For pins to the RIGHT of the headpin:
Use the 10 pin line as your starting point.
Again, keep your feet in the same place on the approach and move your target on the lane. Move your target two boards left for each pin away from the ten pin, i.e. for the 3 and 9 pins, move your target FOUR boards LEFT, for the 6 pin move your target TWO boards LEFT and for the 10 pin, make no adjustment.
For the 5 pin - make no adjustment to your normal strike line unless you have a big hook, in which case you should move your target half a board RIGHT to ensure hitting the 5 pin
