HAWAII INSTITUTE OF MARINE BIOLOGY

HAWAII INSTITUTE OF MARINE BIOLOGY

The Department of Zoology maintains a close relationship with the University's Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology (HIMB). The HIMB Coconut Island Laboratory is located in Kaneohe Bay, about 25 minutes from UHM with transportation from campus available twice daily on weekdays. The laboratory provides facilities and services for faculty members, graduate and undergraduate students, and visiting scholars, for research and education in marine biology and related topics. The research conducted at HIMB covers a broad range of topics, including coral reef biology and ecology, tropical aquaculture, fish endocrinology, behavior of reef animals, pollution and management of marine ecosystems, coastal biogeochemical processes, and fisheries.

Coconut Island is surrounded by a 64-acre coral reef dedicated to scientific research. Its location and a fleet of small boats provide easy access to a variety of shallow water habitats in Kaneohe Bay. Coconut Island itself possesses several enclosed seawater ponds and penned holding facilities for marine animals. Tanks and aquaria with running seawater are available for more controlled studies. Two larger boats are available for shallow water and near ocean plankton tows and water quality work. A variety of analytical equipment is available for environmental and behavioral studies.
