ZOOLOGY DEGREE REQUIREMENTS

RESTRICTIONS

If you have decided to major in Zoology, you should make an appointment with a departmental advisor to discuss your plans, interests, and a possible sequence of courses. Prepare ahead of that visit a prospective sequence of courses which interest you and pick up a declaration of major form from the Zoology Office.

    No 200-level courses in Zoology may be coutned toward major credit.

    No course listed as a requirement for a degree in Zoology may be taken on a Credit/No Credit basis.

    No biological science course grade lower than "C" may be applied toward the major requirements.

    No course grade lower than "D" may be applied toward related required courses such as chemistry, biochemistry, or math.


BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN ZOOLOGY

The Bachelor of Science Degree in Zoology is designed to give students a solid foundation and broad background in the principles and the diverse ways of thinking in zoology as appropriate preparation for the Graduate Record Examindation in Biology and for specialized graduate study in the field.

A student interested in the BS Degree should consult with a departmental advisor in her/his Freshman year. Advising should enable students to take specific courses in a logical sequence.

BACHELOR OF ARTS IN ZOOLOGY

The Bachelor of Arts Degree in Zoology
is a highly adaptable program leading to a liberal arts education with Zoology as the area of concentration. It is particularly useful for students preparing for admission to professional schools.

In planning your program of course work in Zoology you should carefully and thoughtfully consider the selection of courses that apply to your specific interests and goals. Students planning to continue their professional education beyond the BA Degree should also include courses in genetics, botany, one year of physics, mathematics through calculus, and proficiency in an appropriate scientifically active language (e.g., French, German, Russian, Japanese).

As examples of course selections, we have compiled a list of suggested courses that best apply to certain broad areas of specialization. With permission of the instructor, some graduate level courses (600 series) are open to qualified undergraduates.

HONORS PROGRAM IN ZOOLOGY

The Zoology Department encourages junior level students with 3.5 grade point ratio or better to apply for entry into the University Honors Program. Upon entry, students participate in special studies which include colloquia, seminars, and a research program which leads to the honors thesis.
