Snakes have no legs, but have a long, flexible body that is covered with overlapping scales. Snakes have thin, forked tongues and do not have ears on the outside of their bodies. A snake's eyes are always open because they have clear scales to protect them. Snakes can survive on a very small diet. They are carnivores that eat animals by swallowing them whole. The most common snake movement is called lateral undulation, which looks like waves moving from side to side. Snakes live in many different habitats that range from underground burrows to the tops of trees and in the ocean to depths as great as 500 feet. They are mostly found in warmer areas, but may survive in very cold areas.
