TITLE: From Dissertation to Publication: Advice from the University of Washington Press
PANELISTS: Pat Soden, Director; Michael Duckworth, Executive Editor; Jacqueline Ettinger, Acquisitions Editor; Lorri Hagman, Acquisitions Editor
CONVENER: Sharon McQueen (University of Kentucky)
You've successfully defended your dissertation and have landed your first faculty position. Now what?
At the 2007 ALISE annual conference, New Faculty SIG members joined staff of the University of Washington Press as the staff presented an overview of the publishing process and shared suggestions on turning a dissertation into a publishable manuscript, making a manuscript more attractive to an acquisitions editor, finding the right publisher, and discussed what to expect during the evaluation, copyediting, and production stages at university presses. Those new to the process benefited from the vast experience of each panel member and the session also appealed to more experienced scholars who gained fresh perspectives and new ideas.

To the delight of SIG members, the session began with a skit in the form of a brief two act play. After the performance, audience members were asked to identify the “7 deadly mistakes” made by a faculty member during the manuscript submission process.
