Resolution of the Association of Hawaii Archivists

Whereas, Vladimir Ossipoff, the “Dean of Hawaii architects,” designed the Hawaii Medical Library, and
Whereas, the Hawaii Medical Library contributes to the historical architectural landscape in downtown Honolulu, and
Whereas, the historical integrity of the campus of the Queen’s Medical Center, including the historic Harkness Pavilion and the original Mabel Smyth Building would be irreparably and appallingly disrupted by the destruction of the Hawaii Medical Library to be replaced by a parking structure, and
Whereas, the Hawaii Medical Library is home to the Mamiya Medical Heritage Center, the only medical archives in the State of Hawaii, and
Whereas, the Mamiya Medical Heritage Center is the repository for the papers of the Hawaii Medical Association and the Honolulu County Medical Society, and
Whereas the Mamiya Medical Heritage Center is the repository for unique documents, photographs and Nineteenth- and Twentieth-century medical instruments documenting the history of medicine in Hawaii, and
Whereas, the Mamiya Medical Heritage Center has a collection of rare books related to the history of medicine, and
Whereas, the Hawaii Medical Library accepted these medical artifacts, rare books and documents from numerous donors and has an obligation to honor these donors and preserve these documents, photographs and medical artifacts in adequate and appropriate storage, and make the repository available to researchers, and
Whereas, digitization is not a preservation strategy, but only speaks to accessibility,
Now then, Queen’s Medical Center has plans to destroy the building and replace it with a parking structure
And, the Association of Hawaii Archivists strongly opposes the demolition of the Hawaii Medical Library,
Therefore resolved, the Association of Hawaii Archivists wishes to make like-minded individuals and organizations aware of the Queen’s Medical Center’s plans, and take the lead in presenting arguments against the demolition in cooperation with other interested parties as Friends of the Hawaii Medical Library.
