Macintosh error messages
Caution: a system error may be misleading and send you
off in the wrong direction!
| Error # | Definition | Cause | Solution |
| ID 1 | Bus Error | A memory-related error. | Make more RAM available. |
| ID 2 | Address Error | Incorrect memory address. | Check for extension conflict or currepted program preferences. |
| ID 3 | Illegal Instuction | A possible programming error. | Check for an application or system extension conflict |
| ID 4 | Zero Divide Error | A programming error; a remnant of a routine step in the error checking process. | Check for an application or system extension conflict |
| ID 5 | Range Check Error | Another programming error; the number isn't within the range required for the program. | Check for an application or system extension conflict |
| ID 6 | Overflow Error | Another programming error; a number used for calculation is too big for the space set aside in the program. | Check for an application or system extension conflict |
| ID 7 | Privilege Violation | This is strictly a programming issue. Nothing to be concerned about (usually) with a released product. | |
| ID 8 | Trace Mode Error | This is an indication that your Mac has apparently stumbled into a programming mode. | |
| ID 9 | Line 1010 Trap Error | Similar to ID 3; an instruction in your Mac's CPU doesn't understand. Probably due to app. or sys. ext. conflict. | Check for an application or system extension conflict |
| ID 10 | Line 1111 Trap Error | Similar to ID 9 and ID 3. A possible app or sys. ext. conflict. | Check for an application or system extension conflict |
| ID 11 | Hardware Exception Error | This is a generic system error, which appears only on Power Macs on Mac OS earlier than 7.6 like a Type 1 error, a general system or application conflict. | Check for an application or system extension conflict |
| ID 12 | Unimplemented Core Routine | Similar to ID4; a relic of a programming error. Possible due to an app. or sys. ext. conflict | Check for an application or system extension conflict |
| ID 13 | Uninstalled Interrupt | This message indicated that you Mac cannot communicate with a peripheral device like a disk-drive. | |
| ID 15 | Segment Loader Error | You won't see this on Power PC Macs as the error dates back to the 680x0 Macs and indicated that part of the program didn't properly load into memory. | |
| ID 17 | Missing Package | This indicates that a specific component of your system software is missing. | Do a clean install of Mac OS |

| ID 25 | Memory Full Error | Either your Mac doesn't have enough memory to run a program or perform a function, or there's a software conflict that's memory related. | |
| ID 26 | Bad Program Launch | The program you attempted to launch isn't running properly. | Try reinstalling the application or at least delete its preference file. |
| ID 20 | Stack Ran into Heap | A memory error similar to ID 25 | |
| -34 | Disk Is Full | Clear out disk space or copy file to another drive. | |
| -37 | Bad File Name | File appears to be corrupted. | Use a backup if possible. |
| -39 | Logical End of File | The file is corrupted, usually when a preference file goes bad | Replace the file is possible. |
| -60 | Bad Master Directory Block | This is a disk directory error. | Run disk first aid or another hard-drive diagnostic/repair program to fix it. |
| -64 | Drive Not Installed | Cannot read drive or disk. | Check drive, update device driver, or check SCSI chain. |

| -66 | Font Substitution Occurred | This is a font error, possibly indicating the font you tried to use is missing or damaged. | Reinstall the font and try again. |
| -127 | Internal File System Error | This indicated your Mac may have serious disk directory damage (or SCSI chain problem). | Check SCSI chain and run disk first aid or another hard-drive diagnostic/repair program to fix it. |
