The DJ scene in Hawaii:

From my point of view, Hawaii's DJ scene is alive but not as big as the Continental U.S.:

Mobile DJ's: Most DJ's are "Weekend Warriors" but some clubs start up a mobile business and do great but the music selection is junk. (no remixxes)
Club DJ's: Recently there have been a lot of Clubs that opened up mostly in Waikiki but the most of the DJs are not too good in either mixxing or music selection. Now days about 2 radio stations broadcast from clubs.
Radio DJ's: The pay always stinks but the exposure is great. Only a few actually promote concerts. Almost all of them sound pretty professional. The newest radio station that is gaining popularity by storm is Extreme radio 104.3. They play only popular rap, reggae and alternative music. They also do some mixing. There is a very small presence of the F.C.C. in Hawaii.
Mixxing DJ's: There are mixxing DJ's from all over the state but no major competitions have ever been made. Radio and Club mixxing DJ's make mix CDs and they sell pretty good in Hawaii but they are not true mixxing with Turntables and major scratching as they use sequencers, samplers, etc...
Just a reminder: It is really hard to satisfy all of the people all of the time since people have different tastes in music. At that point, most DJs just play what is popular rather than what they like. That is what is the hardest part about being a DJ to me.
