Catalog Course Description:

An introductory survey of computers and their role in the information world emphasizing computer terminology, hardware, and software. Opportunities for “hands-on” experience using applications software may include spreadsheets, word processing, presentations, communications, and databases.

Co-requisites:

None

Prerequisites:

ENG 21, ENG 22 and MATH 22 or equivalent, all with a grade of C or better, or consent of instructor.

Computing Essentials 2015 by Timothy J. O'Leary, Linda I. O'Leary, and Daniel A. O'Leary

Student Learning Outcomes:

1. Utilize online resources for research and communication.
2. Utilize the basic features of computer applications to communicate effectively (word processing, presentations, spreadsheets).
3. Utilize operating system interfaces to manage computer resources effectively.
4. Define, explain, and demonstrate proper computer terminology usage in areas such as hardware, software, and communications.
5. Describe ethical issues involved in the use of computer technology.

Grading Policy:

Assignments: 10 points each, roughly 40 total
Daily participation: 1 point each, roughly 40 total
Discussion Postings: 1 point each, 10 points total
Final Project: 50 points each , 1 total
Optional Assignments: 5 points each, roughly 3 total
Grade calculation: (sum of your scores) / (total points)

Course grades: The percent grading scale is A = 100.00% - 90.00%, B = 89.99% - 80.00%, C = 79.99% - 70.00%, D = 69.99% - 60.00%, F = 59.99% and below. The course grades will not be scaled. There is no extra credit. Your current grade (including your course grade) is calculated in the Laulima Gradebook.

Assignment submission instructions (grading and feedback):

In the first 10 minutes of class, assignments are graded and feedback is given. If you are late to class, then your assignment is also late. Please BACK UP your assignment by attaching it to an email and/or copying & pasting it into the body of the email, and emailing yourself, or store your assignment on UH Gmail Google Drive. DO NOT back up your assignment on a flash drive. If you cannot attend class that day class, email your assignment to me before the deadline.

Late assignments:

Two (2) points are deducted for late assignments. Two (2) points are deducted for assignments turned in on time, and re-submitted for re-grading after the due date. No late assignments will be accepted after the last day of classes.

Excused late assignments:

In the case of serious illness, emergency, or death in the family, late assignments will be excused. You need to show proof, such as a doctor's note, obituary, etc. Excused late assignments need to be submitted within a week of your return to class, otherwise two (2) points are deducted.

Copying (plagiarism):

Ten (10) points are deducted for copying another student's assignment.

Participation points:

You can earn 1 point (or no points) each day for class participation. No points will be earned for the following.

  1. Arriving late to class
  2. Leaving early from class (If your assignment for that class is complete and has been graded, it is OK to leave early.)
  3. Playing video games
  4. Doing work for another class
  5. Any other disruptive or disrespectful activity

Makeup participation:

No makeup participation points will be given.

Academic Honesty:

Students are required to complete and submit their own work. Sharing files, duplicating disks, using another student’s disk, copying, plagiarism, or other such acts will not be tolerated and are subject to penalties including a grade of “F” for the course. Refer to Academic Dishonesty in the Student Conduct Code for additional information.

The Maka‘ala Program

At Leeward CC we want every student to be successful. The Maka‘ala Program is a campus-wide effort that seeks to support students early in the semester when they first begin experiencing difficulty in a class. If I feel that you are having difficulty in my class within the first few weeks of the semester (e.g. missing class, missing assignments, or low test scores) I may refer you to the program.
