Nene

Here is one of several nene that came to visit us one morning at Hōlua Cabin in Haleakalā. Nene are endemic to Hawaiʻi.

ʻĀhinahina

Here is one of many ʻāhinahina (silverswords) that we encountered on our hike one morning from Hōlua Cabin to Kapalaoa Cabin. As an adaption to the low rainfall and intense sunlight, ʻāhinahina have silvery hairs on their leaves that are used to retain water and protect against ultraviolet rays.

Pele's Paint Pot

This part of Haleakalā is known as "Pele's paint pot". It is located between several volcanic cones, and has many shades of red, orange, and yellow. We encountered this area on our hike from Paliku Cabin to Hōlua Cabin.

Cabins

Hōlua, Kapalaoa and Paliku are three wilderness cabins in Haleakalā National Park that you can reserve through a monthly lottery. All cabins have a wood-burning stove to keep warm, bunkbeds for sleeping, and basic pots, pans, and utensils for cooking and eating. The only weird thing is the spooky sounds outside at night!
