Course Content and Limitations:
Film is one of the most developed areas of the Philippine culture. It showcases the best stories and images of history, tradition, lifestyles and practices of the Filipinos. Some of the finest films ever made by Filipino filmmakers and film scriptwriters were adapted from real life experiences, a reconstruction of the brilliant historical moments of the country, if not the best social commentaries on political, social and religious events. In part, this course will tackle how these topics were developed in various films that will be discussed in class. It will also tackle the history and development of the Filipino film industry.
Since life is the main topic of films, and films showcase the various socio-political, moral and cultural representations of people in the country, it should follow that issues tackled by films directly and indirectly be discussed. This is why the course is Ethics focus. Hence, films will be thoroughly analyzed in terms of its contents to find out, in particular, items that have moral, political, cultural, social and philosophical implications.
Based on the film contents, various ethical issues will be discussed and analyzed:
- War, colonialism and racial discrimination in multi-cultural societies
- Leadership and corruption in government
- Violence against women
- History and Reconciliation
- Human Rights and Justice
- Gender Issues
- Crimes and Justice
- Human Frailties
Objectives of the Course:
This is a survey course in Philippine films. At the end of this course, students will
- Learn the history and development of Philippine films;
- Develop an understanding and appreciation of films -as a form of art and as a form of entertainment.
- Discover the culture, values and traditions of the Filipino people as gleaned from the films
- Analyze images and representations of Filipino men, women, gay folks, etc.
- Discuss social, aesthetic and ethical issues found in the film content.
- Make inferences or develop insights on the values, practices and behavior of people realistically illustrated in films.
- Advance analytical and critical skills through analyses and criticism using special or technical vocabulary to the field of films.
- Be equipped with some degree of proficiency in ethical deliberation.
Grading:
Summative and formative evaluations will be provided. Class participation will be critically important. An activity sheet will be accomplished with each film viewing. The activity sheet contains questions requiring critical and analytical responses, as well as completion of grids/graphs; summarizing and/or condensing or transferring dialogs to another modality. These activity sheets will be corrected/evaluated and would provide on-going information students' progress.
A midterm examination and a final oral presentation will provide formative evaluation of student progress.

Students must adequately complete all writing assignments to pass the course with a D grade or better. Students who do not complete all writing assignments will fail the course.
Approaches to the Study of the Course:
- Discussion of various elements/factors affecting social, religious, cultural or political values (individual, small group/class discussions)
- Comparative approach - compare a Filipino film with another foreign film tackling the same issues or problems (writing)
- Finding out the effects of a film (historically, through a survey, or reviews)
- Use contemporary ethical issues in evaluating film content
- Expose students to various readings that analyze/criticize/evaluate Filipino films
