The significance
of social presence in online education has become an important factor in establishing quality online courses. Research has shown that social presence influences students perceptions of learning and satisfaction of an online course.

A common trend for dissatisfied online students involves the lack of student-to-teacher and student-to-student interaction.

The purpose of the tutorial is to educate instructors about social presence and inform them of the tools they can use to enhance social presence in an online course.

Social Presence tutorial

After the learner has completed the tutorial, the learner will be able to: 1) Define social presence and 2) Identify tools to encourage social presence in an online environment.

NOTE: The tutorial is best viewed with at least Adobe Flash 8.

If you do not have flash on your computer, it is highly recommended that you download flash before trying to view the tutorial.


Social Presence tutorial evaluation
To assess the effectiveness of the tutorial, a six question evaluation was created with Google Spreadsheets in Google Docs.

The evaluation contains one question regarding background, four questions Likert-scale questions about the tutorial, and one is an open-ended question for improvement.
