** Sports Shorts **

Shane Komine, a 5-8, 140-pound righthander from Kalani High, has signed a
letter of intent to play baseball for Nebraska.  He posted a 6-1 record
with an ERA of 0.84 for the Falcons this season.  Komine, who'll join
former Iolani player Danny Kimura at Nebraska, turned down scholarship
offers from UH and New Mexico.

The 9th Aloha State Games, Hawaii's version of the Olympics, will kick off
a week from today with a torch-lighting ceremony at the Aloha Tower
Marketplace.  Thereafter, the week-long Games will begin, with over 7,000
athletes expected to compete in 43 sports at 75 different venues.

Kaneohe resident Gabe Memmert, a senior first baseman on the University of
Maine baseball team, received GTE Academic All-America District I honors
after maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher, 
and batting .371 with eight home runs and 48 RBIs this past season.
