** Sports Shorts **

A.C. Carter's NBA hopes were dampened when the former UH point guard
injured his shoulder at a pre-draft camp in Chicago.  He is scheduled to
undergo surgery next week in Honolulu.  Carter had been tabbed as a
possible first-round draft pick.

Three other players with local ties were chosen in the Major League
Baseball amateur draft yesterday.  UH pitcher Randon Ho was the 35th round
pick of the Cleveland Indians, Castle High's Matt Ramie was taken in the
36th round by the Indians, and Molokai's Miles Luuloa was picked in the
45th round by the Detroit Tigers.

UH water polo players Marie-Luc Arpin and Karen Umemura were named to the
American Water Polo Coaches Association All-America squad yesterday.
Arpin was a first-team pick while Umemura was named to the third team.
Both are from Canada.

Punahou athletes Onaona Miller and Bennett Valencia were named
sportspersons of month for May by the Honolulu Quarterback Club.  Miller
led the Buffanblu girls basketball team to the state title and Valencia,
the state record holder in the 400 meters, was a key force on the Punahou
boys track team that also copped a state crown.

Moanalua High School basketball coach Eddie Maruyama, 36, has resigned,
saying he'd like to spend more time with his family.  He is a health and
physical education teacher at Moanalua, where he's coached since 1980.
----
Waimea High volleyball star Mindy Marques and Baldwin shot put and discus
champ Aloha Santiago will attend the University of Idaho next year on
athletic scholarships.
