** Sports Shorts **

The UH Wahine were summarily dismissed from the NCAA Regional 1 softball
tournament after losing two straight games to Pacific this weekend at
Tucson, Ariz.  The Wahine, ranked 10th in the country last week, finish
their season 45-16.

Punahou swept the boys' and girls' titles at the Hawaii high school track
and field championships on Saturday night at Kaiser High.  A crowd of over
2,000 watched athletes break eight meet records with Castle's Bryan Clay
and Kaiser's Endia Abrante setting five between them.

At the state high school tennis championships on Kauai, Punahou won the
boys crown while Iolani and Mililani shared the girls title.
Lahainaluna's Malino Oda, a senior, and Mililani's Erin Hoe, a sophomore,
defended their singles crowns.  Punahou's Bucky Jencks and Mike
Bruggermann won the boys' doubles championship and Baldwin's Lauren
Akitake and Jan Ikeda the girls'.

Australia's Dean Gardiner (men's kayak), Hawaii Kai's Kelly Fey (women's
kayak), Honolulu's Mark Rigg (men's canoe), and Kailua-Kona's Cheryl
Villegas (women's canoe) won their respective divisions at yesterday's 
32-mile Molokai Challenge race from Kaluakoi on Molokai to Koko Marina on
Oahu.

Anna Umemura, 19, rallied from a three-stroke deficit in the final three
holes to win the Jennie K. Wilson Invitational yesterday at the
Mid-Pacific Country Club.  The win was her third in four tries at the
Jennie K., considered one of the three major tournaments of women's golf
in Hawaii.

Takatoriki lost his first match last night but remained in the lead of the
Tokyo Summer Grand Sumo Tournament with an 8-1 record.  Six rikishi are
7-2, including grand champion Takanohana and champions Musashimaru
(Fiamalu Penitani of Waianae) and Wakanohana.  Grand champion Akebono
(Chad Rowan of Waimanalo) is in a group of five at 6-3.

High school state champions in baseball and girls' basketball will be
determined this week.  ILH champ Mid-Pacific is the baseball top seed.
Maui is seeded second, Waianae third, and Waiakea fourth.  Other
qualifiers are Roosevelt, Aiea, Mililani, Kalani, Iolani, Hilo, Baldwin,
and Kauai.  Tournament games will be held at Aloha Stadium.  In girls'
basketball, OIA titlist Kalaheo is seeded No. 1 and is followed by
Punahou, Waiakea, and Baldwin.  Other teams entered are McKinley, Waipahu,
Kahuku, Nanakuli, Maryknoll, Konawaena, Lahainaluna, and Kauai.  First
round games will be held at Kamehameha and McKinley with the remaining
games being played at the Stan Sheriff Center.
