** Sports Shorts **
Former UH player Jason Ring slapped down nine kills and added five blocks
to help the U.S. National team to a 15-12, 15-6, 15-7 men's volleyball
exhibition win over travel-weary China last night at Blaisdell Arena. A
crowd of over 2,000 was on hand. Ring's UH teammate Curt Vaughan and
former Punahou and Stanford player Mike Lambert also saw time for the U.S.
The two teams play again tonight at the Lahaina Civic on Maui in what is
expected to be a much closer match.

With a 6-0 record, Takatoriki is the sole leader of the Tokyo Summer Grand
Sumo Tournament. Six other rikishi are 5-1, including grand champion
Takanohana, an upset victim of Oginishiki (3-3) yesterday. Hawaii's Chad
Rowan (yokozuna Akebono) and Fiamalu Penitani (ozeki Musashimaru) are 4-2.

Mid-Pacific, led by the hitting and pitching of Bryan Lee, defeated
Iolani, 8-3, last night at Aloha Stadium to capture the ILH overall title
and a seeded berth in next week's state tournament. Lee homered, drove in
three runs, and pitched 2 2/3 innings of relief to spark the Owls (14-5).
Scott Tajima went 2 for 3 for Iolani (14-5-1), which also will play in
the state tournament.

Nabosa Basse dropped in 13 points, including four in overtime, in
Maryknoll's 30-28 triumph over Kamehameha last night at McCabe Gym. The
Spartans clinched the ILH's second berth in the state tournament with the
win. League champion Punahou has earned the other berth.

Waiakea (11-0) needs one win in its two remaining games to capture the
BIIF girls' basketball championship. Konawaena (10-2) and Hawaii Prep
(8-3) are battling for second place.
----
Eight players have already signed letters of intent to play baseball for
the University of Hawaii next season. Since some may opt to turn pro, UH
coach Les Murakami will have to wait till after the June amateur draft to
see which of the eight will enroll in the fall semseter. The eight are as
follows:

LHP--Joel Lozano, Centennial (Calif.)
LHP--Andy Pratt, Chino Valley (Ariz.)
LHP--Aaron Pribble, Sir Francis Drake (Calif.)
