With at least two qualifiers in every event, Punahou is a strong favorite
to capture the girls' title at the state high school track and field
championships this weekend at Kaiser High. The race for the boys' crown
will be much closer, with Punahou, Kamehameha, Radford, and St. Anthony's
emerging as the top contenders.
----
At the Tokyo Summer Grand Sumo Tournament last night, Akebono (Chad
Rowan) and Musashimaru (Fiamalu Penitani) notched victories to improve to
3-2 and 4-1, respectively. Takanohana, Kyokushuzan, and Takatoriki are
the tourney co-leaders at 5-0.
----
The U.S. will take on China in an international men's volleyball
exhibition match tonight at the Blaisdell Arena. Three players with local
ties--Jason Ring (UH), Curth Vaughan (UH), and Mike Lambert
(Punahou/Stanford)--are on Team USA. The teams will also play tomorrow at
the Lahaina Civic on Maui.
----
Kalaheo and McKinley won semifinal games last night to advance to Friday's
OIA girls' basketball championship showdown at Blasidell Arena. The
Mustangs, the favorite to win this year's state title, crushed Waipahu,
65-30, in one semifinal at Kalaheo Gym. Meanwhile, McKinley traveled to
Kahuku to rout the Raiders, 56-32. Also on Friday at Blaisdell, Waipahu
will take on Kahuku for third place, and Nanakuli will meet Campbell for
fifth. The Nanakuli/Campbell winner will earn the OIA's final spot at
states. In the ILH, Kamehameha will take on Maryknoll tonight at
McCabe Gym for that league's second berth in the state tournament.
Punahou has already clinched a berth.
----
At Aloha Stadium tonight, Iolani (14-4-1) and Mid-Pacific (13-5) will
square off for the ILH baseball overall title. The Raiders won the
postseason double-elimination tournament while the Owls were the regular
season champions.
