UH softball players Dana Degen (catcher), Joyce Lum (1B), Kehau Cofran
(SS), Melissa McGie (3B), and Tia Morenz (OF) were named to the WAC first
team all-stars yesterday. Na Wahine (45-13), ranked 10th in the country,
will play Pacific (27-20) in a first-round game of the NCAA Tournament on
Friday at Tucson, Ariz.
----
"Guarantee." That's what UH baseball coach Les Murakami said when asked
if his team will make the WAC playoffs next season. The 1998 'Bows just
missed making the postseason and with the loss of just three seniors, the
likelihood of an extended campaign in '99 looks promising. Murakami,
who completed his 28th season as Rainbow skipper, had promised to quit if
his team could not improve on its 1997 mark of 22-34. This year's 'Bows
finished 34-22.
----
Grand champion Akebono (Chad Rowan) is 2-2 and champion Musashimaru
(Fiamalu Penitani) 3-1 after four days of competition in the Tokyo Summer
Grand Sumo Tournament. Kyokushuzan, Takatoriki, and Takanohana are the
co-leaders with 4-0 marks.
----
Iolani beat Kamehameha, 5-3, in the championship game of the ILH
postseason double-elimination tournament last night at Aloha Stadium.
The triumph gave the Raiders a berth in next week's state tournament and
the chance to play regular season champ Mid-Pacific tomorrow night at
Aloha Stadium for the ILH overall title. Kamehameha ended its season at
12-8.
----
Iolani beat Mid-Pacific, 57-50, and Maryknoll topped Sacred Hearts, 43-29,
in ILH girls basketball playoff games last night at McCabe Gym. The
playoffs continue tonight at McCabe with Iolani taking on Kamehameha and
Maryknoll meeting University High. Tonight's winners will play tomorrow
night for the ILH's second berth in the state tournament. Regular season
champion Punahou has already clinched a spot.
