To advance to the postseason, the UH baseball team needed to win all three
games against San Jose State this past weekend but came up one short,
losing to the Spartans, 5-2, yesterday at Rainbow Stadium after winning
the first two games on Friday and Saturday. "Maybe they wanted it too
much," said UH coach Les Murakami after the loss. "The tried too hard."
For the record, the Rainbows ended the '98 season with a 34-22 record
(12-18 WAC). Seniors Neal Honma, Kelly Konishi, and Kamuela Binkie closed
out their UH careers.
----
The UH Wahine softball team was one of 32 teams receiving bids to play in
the NCAA Division I playoffs. Na Wahine (45-13) are seeded second at the
four-team Regional 1 at Tuscson, Arizona. Two-time defending NCAA title
holders Arizona (59-3) is the top seed. The regional begins this Friday
with UH taking on third-seeded Pacific (27-20) at 1 p.m (HST).
----
Musashimaru (Fiamalu Penitani of Waianae) and Akebono (Chad Rowan of
Waimanalo) are both 1-1 in the Tokyo Summer Grand Sumo Tournament. Both
won yesterday after suffering upset losses on opening night. Eleven
wrestlers are 2-0, including grand champion Takanohana and his brother
Wakanohaha.
----
On the local college basketball scene, both UH and Hawaii Pacific
announced good news on the recruiting front. The Rainbows are on the
verge of signing Predrag Savovic, a 6-6 swingman who played at
Alabama-Birmingham this past season. Savovic, who averaged 13.1 points
for UAB, requested and received his release from that school and will
redshirt at UH next year. Meanwhile, HPU signed Delbert Howell, the
unofficial leading scorer on the junior college level this past season.
Howell, a 6-2 shooting guard, averaged 29 points a contest for Malcolm X
College (Ill.) but was not recognized because his JC coach quit at
season's end and did not submit final statistics for the team.
----
The UH Wahine water polo team achieved its goal of reaching the Final Four
of the National Collegiate Championships held in Los Angeles this past
weekend. Hawaii (29-12) ended up fourth, losing to Stanford, 10-4, in a
game for third-place yesterday.
----
On the high school baseball front, Waianae outscored Roosevelt, 8-6, to
win the OIA championship on Saturday night at Aloha Stadium. The
Seariders (12-2) , Rough Riders (9-3), Aiea (10-2), Mililani (9-4), and
Kalani (record not available) will represent the OIA at next week's state
tournament. In the ILH, Kamehameha will square off against Iolani
tomorrow night at Aloha Stadium with the winner earning a state tournament
bid and the right to play regular season champ Mid-Pacific on Thursday
night for the league's overall title. In the BIIF, Hilo clinched a spot
in the state tournament by beating Waiakea, 6-0, on Saturday.
----
Punahou swept the boys' and girls' titles at the ILH track and field
championships on Saturday at Kaiser High track. In the girls' meet, the
Buffanblu easily outdistanced runner-up Kamehameha, 143.5 to 96.5. The
boys' meet was decidedly tighter, with Punahou edging Kamehameha, 84-82.
Punahou's Eri McDonald (200, 400, 800) and Stephen Seta (100, 200, 4x100
relay) and Kamehameha's Noa Alo (triple jump, 110 high hurdles, 300
intermediate hurdles) were triple event winners.
