NN wanted to do Waiau today. But he was late, and I forgot my socks and had to go downhill to buy a pair. So we missed each other, and I went solo. He then showed up at the end of my hike to talk story and return the flashlight I lent him 2 weeks ago.
The trailhead has been changed. A resident kindly told me to go straight up. The beginning part has overgrown a bit, but is still fine, and I met 4 mountain bikers who came up from Kaahumanu side and who will go down Hapaki (my trailhead) side. Looks like there is lots of users at the bottom.
After the junction, the trail becomes more overgrown. Looks like Bob Silva & co. has not come in for probably 6 months. I hiked 3h 50m and did not even get near the Big Dip.
I did waste 20 minutes or so by taking the wrong fork to the left, which seems to go into the valley. Goes to show, the main trail is almost indistinguishable from some hunters' or pigs' trail.
Retraced my steps at 2:15 and came out 5:20. HTMC did not schedule Waiau hike in '98, which is why it is now moderately overgrown. In one year, if no one clears it, it will be gone. This trail overgrows very badly, very fast, with uluhe.
