Paka and fast friend started 7:30 a.m. to go up Halawa and then traverse and visit the _other_ staircase. I started 8:45 and it was 12:45 when I reached the top. I only intended to go partways, and that's what I did. Never saw a soul the whole day until 6pm when the two caught up with me.
Halawa trail was built to put in the towers on the _other_ side of Haiku, and that's where the other staircase is. I have always wondered why the nice contour trail stops at the lookout: it's difficult to see mules going up that left slope to carry cement. So today I looked, and found the continuation of Halawa. I specialize in resurrecting long-gone trails!
Presumably it goes around and joins the summit trail where the staircase starts.
The other side of the Koolau contains _only_ constructed contour trails, Kawailoa, Peahinaia, Laie, ...., Kipapa, all connected by the Great KST. This side of the Koolau contains _only_ up-and- down trails, Lanipo, Bowman, Manana. We know why Halawa exists. Actually the anomaly is Waimano: it's the only unexplained contour trail all by itself. Wonder why it was constructed.
Since no one talked to me all day, I was thinking all day, and came up with this puzzle.
