Hiked Olomana last Friday and was checking out the backside of the third peak. I know there was some discussion of this recently, but my memory's not real good (a product of the TV generation). It looks pretty steep and I'm not sure where it comes out even if it was possible to do. Anyone know? Is the descent do-able and how the heck would you go about getting out of there once you did it?
I went to the backside of Olomana 3 several times, most recently only a couple of weeks ago. The route is the Maunawili Demonstation Trail, Waimanalo side. The Trail crosses the low saddle of the ridge that goes down from Lanipo and rises again to become the Olomanas. At the saddle, follow a trail makai, and it will lead you to the bottom of the cliffs of Olomana 3.
It looks like a very dicey climb without aid. But if cables are set up, it should be doable. Legend "Ski Pole" did it many times, and I personally saw him come up from the backside while I sat on top of Olomana 3 for lunch during a Club hike.
