Went Super Hike today: go up Waimalu Middle, cross over to go down Waiau, then down a side ridge to return to Waimalu valley.
I started at 6 a.m. Was drizzling/raining most of the day. In '97 it was hot and humid, and so I took 4:45 to get to the top from the bottom of the ridge. The cool weather really helped, and it took me only 3:45, having cut a full hour.
The rest of them were gone 20 minutes ago. The beginning part of the cross-over is tricky: it involves going down into a tiny gully with many branches. While I did it in '98, memory was foggy. Worse, real fog came in when I was at the top, and can't see any landmark references. I am sure that the gully I went down was the correct one, but there are no ribbons down the gully, and I became concerned about getting lost, while knowing full well exactly where I am. Happened to me once before, on Waiau, matter of fact :) ....
So I reluctantly went back up and then decided to go back the same way. I even tried to look for my loppers, which I had to abandon in '98. I was almost certain I re-located the exact spot, but, surprise, nothing there.
So I went back and had lunch and then went back the same way down Waimalu Middle. It is always a pleasure to do this noble trail: it's steep but not dangerous, overgrowth is in check in the upper elevations, in other words, the ideal trail in my book. Got out by 8 something, hiking with flashlight only for the last 1/2 hour.
Hiked a full 14 hours today, again mostly in the rain. Reminds me of Waimano to Waimalu Middle in '98.
