A friend of mine is a Nature Conservancy docent and we recently went on one of NC's regularly scheduled trips up to Palikea above Makakilo. It's one of two trips that they do. The other is along part of the Honouliuli Contour Trail, but the Palikea trip is said to be superior.
I mention this hike here because it's easy enough for most people and because the NC volunteers do a great job of highlighting the area's history, geology, plantlife, etc. Participants are driven up the ridge from Makakilo in an NC van, so most of the climbing is done by motor. The hike itself lasts a few hours because the pace is very slow; I think the route is only 3 or 4 miles roundtrip. The views are tremendous. Keep it in mind for friends who want to do a short but interesting hike. I think you make reservations by calling the Nature Conservancy.
