This past weekend I met up with some old college friends who were staying on Maui and we did a couple of neat hikes. On Sunday we hiked into Iao Valley following the stream. The trail we followed wasn't marked, but we saw a couple of teenage kids going back there with towels, so we just followed. We paralleled the stream for maybe 2 miles until the trail pretty much petered out. It was cloudy, and we got rained on a little bit, but overall the hike was great. If you followed the stream a little further, you would be right in the heart of the West Maui Mtns.!! It looks like you could also come out through a huge valley that faces west and comes out near Olowalu. Now that would be nice.
The next day we hiked back into Waihee valley on the windward side of the West Maui Mtns. Now this was a truly spectacular hike! It's only 2-3 miles back to the swimming hole but there are a lot of great things about the hike. There are 2 swinging bridges that you have to cross and when you come to the end there is a nice pool with a big rope swing to play on. You can see way up to the back of the valley where there are several huge waterfalls coming out of the clouds near the mountain summits. There were tour helicopters taking people back there to check them out!
