With all the clear and dry weather we have had lately, a couple of friends and I decided to do Konahuanui on Sunday. What a great day for hiking. We got started from Tantalus Drive around 9:15 and reached the first summit at 11:40. Both peaks were free of clouds for most of the morning and when we arrived at the summit, the views were absolutely spectacular. We notice that the weather seemed to be changing so we headed for peak 2 without taking much more than a five minute break. I was really surprised as to the good condition of this part of the trail, it must be getting a lot of traffic because I don't know of any trail maintenance that gets done to this part of it. I brought my trusty $10 machete in anticipation of needing to bushwhack our way through but didn't even pull it out of its sheath.
Within a half hour, we made our way to peak 2 and enjoyed the awesome views all along the way. However within about ten minutes of reaching peak 2, the clouds were beginning to roll in more frequently and by 12:30 we were completely socked in. Nonetheless we had a great hike and made it back to our cars at 3:00 PM. It's been about four or five months since I've been on that trail and now there are many places with ropes to assist you. Although most are not needed, I did appreciate the one by the rock face, a big mahalo to whoever put it there.
