Muscle to the back of the right knee is aching, and so I forewent (foregoed??) Keahiakahoe and continued with my quest to go down from the top of Aiea Loop to Halawa Valley. This is the 4th try: twice in '98, and once last Sunday.
The beautiful trail terminates in a tangle. I checked out the right side before, didn't work. This time I checked out the left side: didn't work, and so I ploughed into the middle.
After some machete work with hau, I regained the top of the ridge, where there is some more hau. I cleared a couple hundred feet and stopped. I brought my altimeter, and it was 700 feet.
A look at the topo reveals that the stream is only at 560 feet or so, and so I am very near. The top is 1654'.
