I was going to go up the wimp way to Koko Crater and then come back the same way, but made a wrong turn and was on the right fork.
I haven't done the right rim since Aug. 1983. It's become fashionable to say that it's quite easy, and some people even do it pau hana. So I decide to relive the excitement of 16 years ago.
Actually wasn't bad at all. To paraphrase, it even pales next to Diamond Head to ocean, or the much denigrated these days Kaupo Cliffs!
Got to the top with no incident. Can't find any bottle, but there are two flags, one of Hawaii, another multi-color banner that I don't recognize.
Went down the other side, and met a father coming up with a maybe 4-year-old little girl and a baby on his back. Some brave little girl: maybe she will climb Everest when she grows up.
Decided to explore the rim trail straight down, instead of making the left turn near the end to descend into the crater. Not hard at all, didn't even have one single cliff to jump down. Way down the trail becomes indistinct, and I saw the stables to the left, and bailed out down an indistinct trail.
A very pleasant, quite easy, circumnavigation.
