Joined Mahealani & co. for the Halawa and Waihee tours. Also hiked to Waihee Falls, round trip one hour.
Took H-3 to go to Waihee, and then took H-3 again to go back to Aiea. On both trips I tried to look for a ridge that goes up to Halawa ridge from the valley, that Dayle mentioned.
The plan for the 3rd leg was to go down from Aiea into Halawa valley. It gives an undetected way to get into/out of Halawa valley, useful in case I want to do Aiea-Halawa traverse and to come back to my car in Aiea.
The trail starts from the intersection of the Loop and Ridge trails. I have here before, and the trail is in beautiful shape. In about an hour I was only 100 feet or so above the cars on H-3.
But the trail, so magnficent so far, seems to disappear into a gully with messy vegetation. I hunted around for a fork that I missed, but couldn't find any. It does seem that the ridge may veer right towards townside (actually confirmed by looking at a topo), but hau trees grow on the right, making it impassable.
Since I was almost out of time, I reluctantly had to retreat back up. Still, I find it hard to believe that people have been using this trail, making it so open, and then just stopped 100 feet above H-3 and just stared at the cars?? Hard to believe that it does not go down all the way. Well, another day.
