Public Relations Process Assignment Rubric
COM 459

These five questions will be considered in grading. Each will be worth 20 percent. For example, a 9 on the 1-10 scale will translate into 18 percentage points.

  1. Is your proposal written well? Use clear, concise sentence structure and effective word choice. A well-structured proposal will be easy to read, with each section providing useful information in a clear context. Be careful with transitions and verb tenses. Fact errors, blatant grammatical mistakes, misspelled words, etc. all will lower your grade. Choose an appropriate style (e.g., APA style) and apply it correctly and consistently.

  2. Is it informed by credible sources? Although you should find most of what we've covered in COM 459 to be helpful, not all things we have read or discussed will apply. Select other credible, authoritative sources to support your situation analysis and strategic decisions. Try to balance the input of academics (e.g., texts, scholarly journals), public relations professionals (e.g., PR trade publications, professional organizations), advocates (e.g., corporate and non-profit Web sites, pamphlets, reports) and popular media (e.g., online news sources, newspapers, magazines).

  3. Does your proposal show your depth of understanding? Your ability to synthesize and apply appropriate concepts indicates higher order learning (see syllabus objectives). Depending on the direction you take, some concepts we have covered will clearly apply. Make sure you don't overlook them. But don't throw in "the kitchen sink." Keep your proposal at a reasonable level of detail for the page-length guidelines given.

  4. Does your process flow smoothly? Does your strategy make sense given the research findings (and assumptions)? Will implementing your tactics mean meeting your objectives? Will accomplishing your objectives mean “success” to your sponsor? (Keep in mind that public “awareness” is usually only a step toward success in affecting attitudes and behaviors.) Are your suggested evaluation techniques suitable ways to measure campaign effectiveness?
