The ecology of marine systems with emphasis on the interactions between organisms in biological communities and the physical environment. Ecological concepts, the philosophy of science, biomechanics and surveys of major marine communities are covered. Course is discussion-oriented with student- and instructor-directed critical readings of the literature. Individual research on an ecological topic is required and presented as both a written final report and an oral presentation to the class.
Prerequisite: Mare 171, Marine Biology or or its equivalent, or consent of instructor.
Recommended: Mare 350, Marine Monitoring and junior or senior standing.
