This course is an application oriented introduction to the field of data analysis using biostatistics. I use a "hands on" approach to teach this course: we alternate between field surveys of tropical marine communities and computer laboratoriy analysis on a weekly basis. The ultimate goal of the course is to be able to statistically analyze and interprete data collected in a variety of marine studies. In addition, I aim to foster critical reviews of the scientific literature and the fundamentals of experiemntal design. Many of these concepts are developed further in Mare 350 (Marine Monitoring). The course requires completion of an independent project using data collected in the field followed by the preparation of a written report and an oral report to the class. See the Mare 250 photo gallery for images from the field labs.
Prerequisite: Mare 171, Marine Biology or Mare 201, Oceanography
Recommended: Math 115, Applied Calculus
This course will be offered every semester beginning Fall 1996.
