The History of Tea

China introduced the first Tea seed to Japan during the Tang Dynasty (618-907CE).  Tea, however, was regarded as a commodity to the public.   It was only imported in small quantities to server as a medicinal beverage by noblemen and priests.  The uniquely Japanese style of tea did not come about until the deterioration between China and Japan, at the end of the Tang Dynasty.
