Tea and Zen |
The Tea Ceremony draws many of it characteristics from Zen Buddhism. The first people to bring tea seeds to Japan were zen priests that studied in China. Eisai, the founder of Japanese Zen, brought back tea seeds from his travels in China. He grew them for strictly religious purpose and slowly began to associate zen with tea. The zen priests taught that through meditation one could gain enlightenment and the tea ceremony was seen as another way to discipline the mind.
