This is an uncharacteristically serious album from B'z. It still has fun songs, like Girigiri chop or Gin no tsubasa de tobe, but overall the tone is quite serious. This a very "rock" album so if you like their Pleasure sound this album will be a bit of a shock. However, I also feel this is one of B'z best albums ever. I really like this album.
This album is chock full of wonderful guitar solos that really show off Tak's ability. This is definitely the best album for Tak fans. He and his guitar are the stars of this album. He has many long, sexy, very cool, very difficult solos. His solos also display much variety and show that he's truly one of the world's great guitarists B'z did this album right after Tak got his first signature Les Paul Gibson guitar so perhaps that inspired him.
Only a singer as charismatic and emotion-filled as Koshi could have matched so well with the strong guitar playing. Even so, the singing takes a bit of a backseat to the guitar.
1. F*E*A*R
Right from the beginning of the very first song, you know this is going to be a guitar album. I love the opening guitar melody. It's really catchy and sets the stage nicely for Koshi's vocal. Koshi's singing is very intense in this song. Oh and when he says "Shall we dance?" at the end, you want to scream yes, please!
2. Girigiri Chop (version 51)
Oh my gosh. The guitar solo on this song is a standout on this album of standout guitar solos. Every single time I listen to it (and it must be about 1,000,000 times now) I always think, how in the world can Tak move his fingers so fast?? Aside from that, this is one of B'z coolest songs. The melody is a wild roller coaster ride that perfectly matches with the theme of "girigiri" (to the limit). I love the way the tune goes up and down during the chorus. You can just imagine this guy pushed to the edge and somehow hanging on by a thread. And that Koshi scream at the end has to be considered a classic. I sometimes wonder how he did that, and could he actually do it live? :-) [Side note: it's no wonder this song came out so awesome. B'z did *at least* 51 takes of it!! The "version 51" literally means the 51st version of this song!! What a work ethicc]
3. Brotherhood
After the intensity of the first two songs, comes a very sweetly hopeful song. I love the hopefulness of the line, "we'll be alright". When Koshi sings that line, you really feel that we will be alright. I also love the verse right before the guitar solo, where Koshi's singing and the music build and build, and finally climax in Koshi's voice and Tak's guitar in perfect sync. Chicken skin!! Oh and that long drawn out end is really cool. I wonder if Tak actually timed out how long the final note was, and made it a certain length? Knowing him, probably. [Side note: this song is such a fan favorite that B'z fans tend to refer to each other as "Brothers".]
4. Nagai Ai
I think this song is great. Such a sweet beginning, then bam! Intense guitar playing. And Tak puts those guitar riffs in just the right place. I also love the guitar squeal right before Koshi starts singing. The lyrics of this song are quite cool too. "Motto nagai ai da, aishitekuremasen deshou ka?" (Won't you love me for a bit longer?) This line is sung perfectly by Koshi in just the right pleading/begging tone. Or the line, "Kawatte yuku boku wo yurusenai, anata wa dosumutsumori" (You won't forgive me for changing, but what the h^%$ are you talking about?) sung in just the right level of frustration. You can just imagine this guy wanting to be loved by his woman but not understanding why she's not happy with him! I also like the guitar playing right after the first chorus. And of course the solo is fantastic!! Very very intense to perfectly match the mood of the song. I have to say, only Koshi has the intensity and emotion to have sung this song and not have his voice get lost in all that hard rock guitar playing.
5. Yume no youna hibi
After all that rockin' out, this is a nice laid back song. The song matches perfectly with the music. Yume no youna hibi = days like a dream. That's Tak singing "hey hey it's a beautiful day, hey hey it's a wonderful day" in the background. This song, like all good B'z songs, just makes you want to sing along. Nan no koto mo, konna koto mo yume ja nai ze...
6. Gin no tsubasa de tobe
This is an all out B'z "good fun" song. It's great in concert. Again, it's a perfect match of words and music. When Koshi sings "we've got the wing" you just feel you're flying around in the sky. I believe the title means "we have wings of silver". I love the "talkin 'bout you baby" line. I also like the "...hey!...hey!" in the second verse. The first line of the first verse is sung in a very cool manner. Oh and of course the "tottemo sweet" phrase is a classic. We get the added bonus of a short harmonica solo by Koshi.
7. SOno te de furete goran
I like listening to this song, and I would never fast-forward over it, but for some reason I don't have much to say about it. I would say it's a typical B'z album song. Now, all B'z songs are a cut above, so a typical album song from B'z is comparable to a good song on anybody else's album. Oh but of course the guitar solo is totally rockin'. :-) I do enjoy the harmonies on this song.
8. Nagare yuku hibi
This is a very nice introspective song. Koshi sings in a much gentler style than on the previous 7 songs. This song has one of the longest Tak solos ever in B'z history. It's quite a cool solo and I love listening to it.
9. SKIN
This is the ultimate seduction song. It's so sexy, yet not vulgar in any way. Only a man as handsome, sexy, and vocally talented as Koshi could pull this song off. And of course, in the middle of this intense song, is a perfectly matched guitar solo that brings out even more sexy power. [Side note: you have to read the translation while listening to the song. Better yet, watch the performance of this song on the Yokohama video and note the mic-stand action.]
10. Ikasete okure!
Just like track 7, I like this song, but I feel it's just a typical B'z album song. I don't have much to say about it. Even the guitar is just a typical Tak solo. Played well as usual, but still a pretty typical solo.
11. Shine
This song is extremely cool and it's a very unique B'z song. No other song they've done sounds even remotely like this song. I love the acoustic guitar in the beginning, and the way it transitions into the rock part of the song. There is also an extremely cool bass/guitar duet in the middle! How can their fingers move so fast??? In fact the bass throughout the song is quite cool. The chorus is my favorite part in terms of the singing.
