Disclaimer: I have no training in reviewing albums, so I'll have to say these comments are all my opinion only. I definitely have no guitar training so while I can tell Tak is an awesome guitar player, I can't comment too much on his playing beyond saying what I enjoy listening to. Now on to the comments.
B'z have many, many different sounds. From dance music to hard rock, they've done just about every style. Overall, I'd say they do mostly "rock and roll". Sometimes more rock, sometimes more pop. But always great music!!
My favorite B'z sound: their cool fusion of pop, dance, and rock 'n roll. Examples of this would be Taiyo no Komachi Angel, Love Phantom, Negai, Zero, Bad Communication.
Another thing about B'z albums is how well they hang together. Somehow, the songs on the album all "fit" nicely together. It's almost impossible for me to make a mixed cd from the albums because I can't bear to break the songs up. The only exception to this would be "Konya tsuki no mieru oka ni" at the end of Eleven. Somehow, it felt like they tacked the song onto the end of the album just to include it; it didn't really fit with the rest of the album.
Proof that B'z puts a lot of thought into what songs go on what album Esome of the songs from Green were actually finished at the same time as Eleven. But they held onto them until they felt like putting out a more pop album. Tak is the master of the song order too. He knows just how to mix up the songs so that a B'z album is never boring, always interesting.
Because their original albums hang so well together, I'm finding that the more I get into B'z, the less I like their compilation albums. Those do not hang as well together, plus listening to the many voices of Koshi close together is a bit disconcerting. But I still like their compilation albums, I just LOVE their original albums.
One more thing about B'z albums Ewith most of them, you need to listen to them several times before the songs start to grow on you. I wasn't impressed with Run, In the Life, or Green the first time I listened to them, but now I LOVE those albums! Actually this is one of the best things about B'z albums Ethey improve with each listen. Albums that I didnt like at all on first listen, have become favorites!!
Another interesting thing about B'z albums is no matter what, there's at least one song (and usually more) that I consider a "classic" in that I could probably listen to the song over and over and over and over and over and over again. Even their very first album, which sounds completely dated, has some songs that I really like!
I own all of B'z albums and I love each and every one of them. :-) I'm really surprised that I can like all of them. I have other favorite artists, but I don't like all of their albums like how I like all of B'z albums. Their style has gone all over the place, which probably helps keep my interest.
